About the Project
Sky TV is New Zealand's largest pay-TV broadcaster with over 900,000 subscribers streaming live sport, entertainment, and on-demand content nationwide. We were contracted to lead the development of Sky's flagship Android TV (tvOS) app using React Native — from initial launch through multiple major releases — delivering high-performance live DVB and VOD playback, premium pay-per-view content (UFC), and a seamless remote-driven UI to hundreds of thousands of living rooms across New Zealand.
The Challenge
Sky TV needed a premium tvOS streaming app that could handle live DVB broadcast, VOD, and pay-per-view content (including UFC events) for 900,000+ subscribers across New Zealand. The existing approach was fragile — shipped infrequently, manual test cycles, and a global distributed team without clear architectural standards.
How We Delivered
Scoping & Team Setup
Established architectural standards, RFC process, and technical workshops to align a globally distributed team on patterns and release cadence.
Core App Architecture
Built the React Native tvOS foundation with optimized DVB and VOD playback, remote-driven navigation, and the premium PPV purchasing flow.
Automated Testing
Implemented Detox E2E test suite and unit test coverage. Reduced critical bug rate by 30% within the first two release cycles.
Release Automation
Set up Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines enabling bi-weekly release cycles — down from monthly and inconsistent to reliable two-week sprints.
